The lowdown on cotbeds

A cotbed is one of the biggest purchases you’ll make for your baby so getting it right is crucial. Here are some tips to help you decide

What to look for when choosing a cotbed

When choosing a cotbed for your baby, here are some important things to look for

Cotbeds

What to look for

Cotbeds tend to be bigger and bulkier than cots, so it’s important to work out if you’ve got enough space in your bedroom or nursery for one. Always measure before you buy.

It’s also worth thinking about when you plan to have another baby, as if it’s within two years of your first child, you may find that you will need the cotbed for your new baby, so won’t necessarily get the benefit of using it for a toddler bed!

You will also need to buy extra bedding when you convert the cot into the bed.

Some cotbeds have even greater longevity, and can convert to a third piece of furniture, like a desk, seat or even a sofa.

Need to know

As the cotbed could be part of your home for several years, make sure the design is one that will fit in with the rest of your decor.

The mattress rule applies the same as with cots, you need to buy the right mattress that fits properly with no gaps. Always ask the retailer if you have any concerns.

Checklist

  • Be sure you have the space to accommodate a cotbed
  • Ensure you have the correct fitting mattress and covers
  • Think about whether you will benefit from using it as a toddler bed
