Amelia has made the number one girls’ name for the first time since 2015. She’s always been the bridesmaid and never the bride, always playing second fiddle to Olivia as the UK favourite name for girls for the last six years.

Amelia last hit the number one spot in 2015 when she had held the title of Top baby names for girls in the UK for a run of 4 years from 2012-2015.

Highest climbing girls’ names this year

Modern favourite Freya is making her mark climbing up two places to number 5 after debuting in Top 10 in 2020.

Willow breaks into the Top 10 for the first time – up from 12th place to 7th.

Evie back in favour and pops back into the Top 10 (position 8) after slipping out of it 5 years ago in 2017.

Floral inspired names are set with a chance to break into the Top 10 in the next year including:

  • Daisy (+11)
  • Rosie (+5)
  • Florence (+3)

Baby girls’ names on the decline

Some classic names are looking likely to slip out of Top 20 in the coming year including:

  • Sophia -10
  • Emily -4
  • Ivy -4
  • Ella -3
  • Poppy -3

These once firm favourites are likely to be replaced in the Top 20 by Maisie (+6 places at position 25) and the classic name Alice (also +6 places at 21).

Other recent trend names of the past few years such as Evelyn, Sienna and Beckham inspired Harper are declining in popularity and likely to be replaced by Maya, Violet and Lottie.

Plus, traditional names that in recent years have been on the decline are making a comeback such as Emma and Clara which are both climbing sharply – up 20 places to position 42 and 70 respectively.
