If you are suffering from an array of pregnancy symptoms, whether it’s back pain, swollen ankles or any others, it’s worth knowing that complementary therapies can provide relief from many of those niggling pregnancy symptoms.

There’s a whole range of treatments you can try from acupuncture and reflexology, to hypnotherapy and Reiki, which can ease away worries, soothe pain and boost your energy levels – making pregnancy a whole lot more enjoyable.

Check with your midwife

Before having any complementary therapy, it’s always worth checking in with your midwife first to make sure it’s right for you. After which, any therapies and treatments you might choose should not be used as an alternative to antenatal care - you should continue to attend all your appointments.

Choose a professional

Complementary therapies can bring great comfort, but many are unregulated, so you need to make sure you choose a practitioner who’s trained, registered and insured – do check they’re on the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) register. It’s also important your practitioner understands the nuances of treating mums-to-be. For example, your abdomen should not be massaged during the first three months of pregnancy.

Watch your symptoms

Aches and pains are normal in pregnancy, which is no wonder as your body is changing every day and doing that truly miraculous thing of growing your baby. But if you’re ever worried about odd symptoms, have a chat with your midwife.

And relax....

Now you know how to do it safely, all you need to do is choose which lovely therapy sounds most suitable for you!
