The Lowdown

Choosing your child’s highchair can be quite a challenge as you have to look for a model with practical features and also one that will blend in with your home’s decor. The majority of high chairs are plastic, but many parents choose a wooden one as it feels less like a bit of baby gear and more like a proper piece of furniture.

What to look for

You can buy wooden high chairs with and without trays. The advantages with having a tray is that mess is more contained, but using a high chair without one means that you child can eat up at the table with the rest of the family, so it’s much more sociable. A good compromise is to buy one with a removable tray so you have the best of both worlds.

Need to know

Invest in a padded insert if you decide to buy a wooden high chair so that younger babies in particular have enough comfort at mealtimes. Many models have them available to buy as extras, or there are universal ones available too that will fit most highchairs.

1. Combination highchair, East Coast Nursery, £69.99
Made from easy to clean rubberwood, this convertible model transforms into a toddler-sized table and chair once your child no longer needs to use it as a high chair. There’s a sturdy five-point harness and the three-position tray can also be removed.

2. Tripp Trapp, Stokke, £159
A Scandi design classic, the stylish and contemporary-looking Tripp Trapp has been gracing homes for decades. It’s wooden, but available in a whole host of colours, from pastel shades to bold brights. Best of all is it’s longevity, as it can be used for adults too, and you can also buy a newborn set so babies can use it from birth.

3. No Tray Highchair, Scandinavian Selection, £47
You might be familiar with this model of highchair from dining out in restaurants, but its simple, no-frills designs will work just as well in your home. It’s easy to clean, as there are no nooks and crannies for food to get hidden in, and the compact size makes it a winner for smaller homes. It even has play beads to keep your tots amused before tea is served!

A simple and classic design that has a solid wooden structure with large wooden food tray that folds back behind the seat for easy storage and to make it easier for your little one to be seated. It has a full safety harness to keep your little one safe as they eat.

5. Alpha Plus highchair, Hauck, £69.99
