Miscarriage and loss

Dealing with the devastating loss of a baby

Sometimes things don't go as planned

Dealing with a miscarriage and the loss of a baby is a heart breaking and devastating time. Sadly miscarriage is common, with close to 20 percent of confirmed pregnancies resulting in miscarriage. Many of these will be early miscarriages which occur before week 12 and will usually be the result of a complication with the embryo development at a time when a lot of different changes are occurring.

An example of this is an Ectopic Pregnancy which occurs when the fertilised egg implants itself incorrectly. These are totally unpreventable and will not be down to anything you’ve done during the course of your pregnancy.

Losing a baby between week 12 and week 24 is classed as a late miscarriage. Fortunately late miscarriages are a lot rarer affecting just 2% of women. If you lose your baby after 24 weeks they are considered stillborn and it’s possible you may go into labour when the miscarriage occurs.

Losing a baby at any stage of pregnancy is very tough and each individual will find their own way to deal with the grief associated with it. It will be hard for your friends and family to understand exactly what you’re going through and it’s up to you if you’d prefer to talk through your experience and what you’ve gone through.

The most important thing is that you take everything at your own pace and don’t let anything or anyone else dictate how you should be feeling and when. The Miscarriage Association can offer help and support for you and your partner.
