In recent years the term ‘baby brain’ has become a household term with new mums and many a daft comment or strange thing we do is blamed on it.

But what if baby brain doesn’t exist? New evidence suggest there really is no negative effect on the brain from having a baby, in fact, one scientist suggests the complete opposite.

An article in the New Scientist says that there is very little evidence that baby brain is in fact a real thing and a woman’s brain may perform better now she is a mother.

It has been widely assumed that pregnancy and motherhood turns women into a less intelligent version of their former self, to put it politely.

The new theory from American graduate scientist, Katherine Tombeau Cost, has found that rather than having a baby will turn your brain to mush, it will actually prime your brain for empathy, reasoning and judgement.

She found more evidence that contradicted that pregnancy and motherhood negatively effect the brain. In previous experiments done on rats, Cost discovered that the rats were actually mentally sharper after giving birth.

So Katherine Tombeau Cost has set herself a mission to dispel the myth that pregnancy has a negative effect on a mother’s brain. She has entered into her own research into the subject to tell the real story about baby brain and is also looking into understanding postnatal depression better.

Perhaps all the things us mums blame on baby brain will have to be blamed elsewhere, erm…tiredness and hormone changes might do it!
